Map and Route
Flora and Fauna
The walk from Watering Cove to Marahau has some lovely sections of native bush, particularly between Watering Cove and Appletree Bay. Some other parts were farmed up until 60 years ago while another very small piece of land above Anchorage was hit by fire about 20 years ago. This makes for a great case study of the regeneration of NZ native bush. You can see the changes between the original trees and the other, less dense, younger growth.
Taking a stroll down the many side tracks to Te Pukatea Bay, Anchorage, Akerston Beach, Stillwell Bay or Appltree Bay will certainly reward those that make the effort.
Region History
Not surprisingly, a local Maori tribe resided at Pitt Head (located just north of Te Pukatea Bay) as it is probably the most formidably defensive Pa (village) site in the Abel Tasman. The headland rises steeply from all sides. Its only access being a very narrow track joining it to the mainland. Pitt Head also provides one of the best photo viewpoints in the Abel Tasman, looking down over the beautiful Cresent Moon beach of Te Pukatea Bay.
